'Everything turned to sand': Deadly earthquakes in Afghanistan kill over 2,000

Two powerful earthquakes killed at least 2,000 people in western Afghanistan, AP reported. It’s one of the deadliest earthquakes to strike the country in two decades.

The US Geological Survey stated the quake’s epicenter was about 40 kilometers northwest of Herat city. It was followed by three very strong aftershocks.

Clambering over rocks and debris, Afghans attempted to dig out the dead and wounded with their hands in Herat province after the deadly quakes.

Villages have been destroyed and buildings were crumbled to the ground. Rescue operations are underway as survivors and victims are trapped under the debris.

“Besides the 2,060 dead, 1,240 people are injured and 1,320 houses are completely destroyed,” said Abdul Wahid Rayan, a spokesman at the Ministry of Information and Culture.
